Alright, my second recommendation. This, unlike my last, and unlike the next one I will put up here, has no scifi. It's pure, old-school fantasy all the way, but done in one of the most intelligent fashions I have ever seen, and with a skill I think many of us see all too rarely.
Anyway, its got a great love component, great story, and a seriously badass main character, plus all the "Fuck you, evildoers" moments you could ever want (including the requisite evil brat little princess getting her divine comeuppance. GOD that was awesome.)

They're making a TV series out of these books! It's called Legend of the Seeker and if you go to Terry Goodkind's webpage, he's got links and little promo videos and stuff on it. It airs Nov 1, apparently. I haven't read the books yet (YES, I plan on it and NO I haven't had time because I'm freaking moving *grumbles*) but from what I can see it looks pretty good.
